No selling or anything, just practising the craft where people can see.

Traditional craft work as performance art, I guess.

Hollie
For my first-ever #MakersHour post, here’s the first hand bound book I ever made, in 1999. I love it so much. It’s filled with photos and journal entries. I haven’t made another book exactly like this one since, but learned Coptic stitch a few years ago and just finished a class on French stitch. I do hope to make some others like this one (I think a cork cover could be beautiful), I just need to relearn the stitching technique.

Oh and HI! Hollie
Fellow bookmaking f(r)iends: Thirty seconds into this video, she has a great visual of why folding with the grain is so much better than folding against the grain, and I love it when something kinda makes sense in class, but then a great visual makes it BLOOM into total, complete, obvious sense that I will carry with me always.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5VxME6OIQSY

#BookMaking #Bookbinding #BookArts

errors=panic
Recently I've been sketching a kind of ... #BookBinding syllabus in my head. Like, a "So you want to start bookbinding" kinda thing.

It's mostly inspired by how I started bookbinding and the various ways I struggled and some of the ... not-great advice and tutorials that are out there. (Like people recommending coptic binds as a good beginner structure... Ugh. :blob_disapproval: )

The kind of "First, try structure A, then B then either C or D depending on goals and personal preferences. Probably don't do X, Y or Z unless you have access to specialized equipment or don't mind these specific things I do mind." I would have liked to read as a beginner.

I probably should make this a blogpost or something.
